Social and Emotional Skills (SEL) are taught, then practiced through Immersive Direct Experiential Application (IDEA) and supported with Awareness Education (AE).

Current educational theory recognizes that SEL helps lay the foundation for a student's mental health and academic success. 

2013 TDSB Student Mental Health Strategy:

  • 72% feel anxious

  • 66% feel significant stress

  • 50% feel there is no adult to turn to 

  • 1 in 7, 11-16 year olds are bullied

AWARENESS EDUCATION (AE)

Similar to mindfulness, these practices incorporate meditation, breathing exercises and non-judgemental observation techniques.  

  • Since 2005, 14 studies on awareness/mindfulness prove cognitive, social and psychological benefits to students

  • In 2013, a 5 year Harvard medical study shows "there is a true biological effect" of meditation
